So my shop is very limited on space at around 250 sq ft.  The few boxes of glass I own are stacked under the bending table.  Now that I have around 15 or so different boxes, they're starting to shift and lean.  This weekend I had several more boxes arrive, so I'm starting to think I should do something before it gets really out of hand.

My first thought was to take some scrap plywood and make a 6" x 6" divider shelf thing.  Then I started thinking I could pack a few more in if I just removed the glass from the carboard box, make the dividers 5" or 5.5" and just leave the glass in plastic.

Just wondering if anyone here has a creative solution, or if it's best just to do the usual shelves.

I have suffered from limited space almost everywhere I have ever worked, even down to an 80-ish square foot space.  For glass storage, I am presently using some of the boxes the glass comes in, in much the same way that you are, but I do not stack them more than 3 high as a means to prevent crushing.  Additionally, I have added some storage using thin wall PVC drain pipe and flat caps (these are the lightweight types not inteneded for pressure applications, so they don't weigh much.  These, I find, are great for keeping glass clean.  All of this is located under my bending table.

If you have space, you can store more in a similar way underneath your processing table or in other places.  I do not recommend storing it vertically unless you have no other options.  And if you do store it vertically, the PVC may work better since you can cap them to keep dust out and you must have them restrained so they don't fall over and also have enough head room to pull a stick out completely.

On a related note-- for your patterns, because they are very light weight, you can roll them up, slip a toilet paper tube over them to hold them, and then place them into an overhead holder suspended from the ceiling (away from your burners!) and this will also help free up space.

If you wish, you may reach out to me directly (go to my profile and the personal website link) and perhaps if I can see some photos of your place I may have other ideas for you.

thanks,
Robert

All excellent ideas!  Some 4" thin wall pvc seems perfect, cleaner and less weight.  Being able to cap it is a bonus.

Same with patterns, I've resorted to folding and storing in file folders.  Although, that has been frowned upon by my peers. =)

I do have space between my overhead beams, so that's one I'll likely get around to doing also.

Thank you Robert.  I'll likely take you up on that offer soon.  All the best

Here's what I did with my glass storage under my bench.   I added pieces of 2 x 4 on one side and a long, sideways CD shelf on the other with stacks of electrodes on top to make an edge to each side and keep the box stacks from leaning too far. It works!

Nice! The cd rack is a great choice.  Whenever I can, I try to upcycle for my shop.

I've been considering making a new table, such that I store glass boxes with their open end on the long side.  Seems it would require making the top surface about 62" wide, and the base a minimum of 53".  Then maybe include a top and bottom shelf about two boxes high.
